Gilles Millet begin the violin at the age of 8. After earning second prize in the International Bach Competition of Paris in 1986, Gilles studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse Paris from 1987 to 1991 in the class of Régis Pasquier. In this class, Gilles was awarded first prize unanimously with a prize of distinction for his work in the contemporary music selections.
With more than 80 concerts a year, Gilles has performed in some of the most famous European and International Halls like the Muzikgebouw and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall in London, Konzerthaus in Vienna and Berlin, Elbphilarmonie in Hamburg, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Bozar and Flagey in Brussels, De Singel in Antwerpen, Sapporo Concert Hall and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Frick Collection in New York, Philips Collection in Washington, Hertz in San Francisco, Philarmonie in St Petersburg and Moscow, Philarmonie de Paris, Gaveau, Opéra Bastille, and Musée d’Orsay in Paris. As a solo violinist and chamber musician, Gilles is regularly on tour in America, China, Japan, Taïwan, North and South America, and throughout Europe. He also collaborates with the Borodin, Brodsky, and Enesco Quartets, and with musicians such as L.O.Andsnes, M.A.Hamelin, A.Melnikov, M.Maisky, C.Hagen, S.Kam, J.Widmann, T.Zimmerman, P.Moraguès. He also appears with many orchestras, such as the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège.
In June 1991, Mr. Millet founded his quartet, Quatuor Danel, and is the second violinist of the ensemble. Winner of the first prize in Shostakovich competition and Prix de la Presse in the Evian Competition, London, the quartet is known for their systematic introspection of the repertory. Danel quartet appears regularly in the most renowned festivals of chamber music, such as Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland, Ottawa Chamber Music festival in Canada, Bantry Chamber Music festival in Ireland, Alpen Klassik festival and Schleswig-Holstein in Germany, Bregenz, Zaubersee Lüzern Festival, Les folles journées de Nantes, Festival de Fayence, Festival de Montpellier, Musica Strasbourg, Biennale des quatuors in Paris and Amsterdam, Mito Festival Milano e Torino, and Enescu festival Budapest. Quatour Danel is also active in the world of commissions collaborating with composers like Wolfgang Rihm, Helmut Lachenmann, Sofia Gubaïdulina, Pascal Dusapin, and Bruno Mantovani to name a few. In 2005, the Quatuor Danel became quartet in residence at the University of Manchester, and Gilles has been active there giving numerous Master’s degree classes, seminaries and concerts. The Quartet has more than 30 CD’s by CPO, Universal, Fuga Libera, Calliope, Triton, Ondine, Col Legno, Auvidis, Megadisc, and they are the recipient of many prizes including choice of the month Gramophon, Grand prix du Diapason d’or and Diapason d’or de l’année, and the Grand Prix du disque Charles Cros. The Danel Quartet also counts to its credit several cycles of complete works, namely Beethoven, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Bartok, and Weinberg.
Gilles Millet, with Quatuor Danel, is in residency in Wigmore Hall for the years 2020-2022.
Gilles Millet is currently coordinating and teaching chamber Music in IMEP in Belgium. He regularly offers masterclasses in Amsterdam for NSKA and for ProQuartet in France, and he is the founder and organiser of Masterclass in the Domaine Rurhof.
